Inventory for both retail and wholesale

Seeking ideas on how best to set up inventories for assembled items that are sold at both wholesale and retail levels. The assembled products are generally sold wholesale, but occasionally sold retail.
One assembly build for each with an allotment of the inventory based on sales history to each category? If so, is it difficult to move the inventory from one sales level to another when product in one are gets low?

Unless there is a difference in cost, there is no distinction between wholesale and retail inventory at the inventory level. For any given item sold, the cost of producing that item would be the same whether the item is sold at wholesale or retail

The distinction between wholesale and retail would be made when sales are made: both in terms of the selling prices (if any) and sales tax applied.

The sale prices would differ. I understand I could set various price levels from the "maintain inventory items" screen for products based on whether they were retail, wholesale or whatever.

I was a little confused by the "Item Tax Type" (taxable vs. exempt). since retail sales would be subject to sales tax while wholesale sales would not. What is the purpose of that selection feature? And if I select "exempt" how would that selection be inpacted if the product was sold at the retail level?

I hope this is clearer. Thanks for the input.

if the item will ever be taxable, you want to mark it with a taxable item tax type. Whether or not sales tax is calculated on an invoice will be determined by the customer sales tax code. Your retail customers would be assigned a tax code with whatever percentage and the wholesale customers would either have no tax code, or I like to create an EXEMPT tax code so that every customer has a tax code whether taxable or not.

In the Maintain-> Customer screen, you can set their default price level and tax type. If one customer will always purchase wholesale, you can set him as Exempt for taxes with the wholesale price level.
