Backup File

I looked at some of my backup files(.ptb) and found that all of them contain duplicate files. My main backup file has more than a dozen "company.dat" files in it, all with different dates. I am using PT Complete 7.0 on a network with the main computer running Windows ME and the three other computers on the network running Windows98. This is causing restore problems in addition to backup file bloat. Is this normal for .ptb files?

I think you know Peachtree's .ptb files are just zip files, that means renaming the file extension to zip will make it possible for software like Winzip to open them.

As you say you can view the contents, how about the folder / directory storing them. Depending on the zip tool you use, the folder name for that compressed file can be hidden so there're duplicate names on the list but actually under different folders, which is possible.

Actually WinZip will open the file without changing the extension. The duplicate files all reside in the same folder. Since I got my file cleaned up, only "Company.dat" is recurring in the backup file. Each one is the same size but with the backup date and time of it's backup.

I saw exactly the same thing in a PTB file a client sent me. Is there only one company.dat file in your company folder? If not, that may be your problem.

Are you using the same name for the backup file? Try a different name and see if the problem persists.
