I'm trying to move my PCA13 to a new system, and I keep getting a little window that pops up whenever I try to open Peachtree on the new computer.

"Error # 53 was generated by PCAWMenu
File Not Found"

When I then click the OK button, it kicks me back to the desktop. Is there a way to get that message to quit popping up whenever I try to start Peachtree?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone my be able to give me.

Jake

This error msg can be caused based on different Windows environmental settings.

Based on your suggestions that this is a new install on a new computer, then the first and most likely cause is an inadequate file setting in the Windows CONFIG.NT file. Go to START and RUN, type CONFIG.NT and click OK. When prompted use NOTEPAD to open this file. Scroll to the last line and change the default setting from FILES=40 to FILES=199. Save and close the file. Open Peachtree, if the program opens as expected then the problem is solved.

If the problem persists, then click on MY COMPUTER and Properties, then click on ADVANCED. At the bottom of the screen, click on Environmental Settings. Use the bottom window and click on ADD. In the first field or Variable type PC3ID and the second line labeled Value, type CO.

Now add a second SYSTEM Variable, OVERLAY_HEAP and the value is 1.

Look for an Environmental variable in both the top Window and the bottom window that reads PCADATA. If found remove it.

One or more of the above Windows Environmental Variable is either missing or if present is incorrectly set.

Thanks for the reply, Rick. But unfortunately, after doing all that you suggested, I am still getting the same message, and still keep getting kicked out each time I try to open Peachtree.
Just so you know, this is a new Dell XPS400 with Pentium D, and lots of memory and storage, running Windows XP Media Center Edition. The PC I am trying to move Peachtree from was an old H-P with Windows 98.
But I think I have caused my own problem. When I first loaded the Peachtree CD in my new computer, it loaded as any new install should, and opened as it should. So I then went over the old PC and made a backup disk of the system files and a disc with the data files. I first tried to restore the system disk to the new system, and got some kind of error message that said I was going to have to re-start Peachtree. But when I tried, that failed. So I un-installed Peachtree, planning to re-install. As I was going through the un-install process, I kept getting messages that asked if I wanted to also delete various files, and I said yes to all. Then when I re-installed Peachtree, I started getting the message that I get now. I have restored the system to settings on the date I recieved it, and I still get the same message when I try to open Peachtree. I am completely at a loss as to what it is going to take to make this thing work.
Do you have any other ideas, or suggestions?
And again, thank you for your help!!

If you can uninstall Peachtree via Windows, then do so. Then safe guard your data files by backing them up or copying them to another media. Now remove the PCA folder where you loaded Peachtree the first time.

Load from the Peachtree Classic 13.0 CD to the default location i.e. C:\PCA. Peachtree will now load all required program files. Once the program is functioning again, then do not restore the Peachtree System Files. You will recreate them with ease. Copy back your datafiles, including their respective folders i.e. C:\PCA\??GLDATA (?? - represent your company ID).

Open Peachtree, and enter your Company ID, when prompted ADD this new company and complete the name, address and GL Account Size (5 or 6) fields. When back at the open company screen, enter your company ID. At the main menu, select each of your company modules i.e GL and tell the sytem to activate it. Check the data path and adjust if necessary so that it points to your datafolder. You should then be notified that datafiles already exist and you will be asked if you want to replace them. The answer is NO.

Repeat the above for each module. This is what is commonly called re-building the Company. Next, you will want to back to the Company ID screen and select F5 and here you will define your printers.

If this does not work, then the next step would be to uninstall and then to remove all references to Peachtree in the Windows Registry.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! That last reply did the trick. I had not even thought about removing the PCA folder from the first install. Everything is now installed and all seems to be working as it should. I am very glad I found this forum, and I will be a regular visitor here. And to you, Rick, a very sincere thank you.
