I have a Multi-user pack for Peachtree Complete Acctg 2006. There are only myself (the admin) & someone else who uses the software. We are both set-up as users & we both have complete access. We are also using real time posting. My problem is whenever I try and do something it tells me I cannot do it in multi-user mode. I must be in single user mode. So the other person has to log out. The whole point of having a multi-user is so that more than one person can be on at once. Now I know in Quickbooks there is a way to switch from single to multi-user and back but I cannot find that in Peachtree anywhere. Please HELP!

Use Windows Task Manager, check Processes and look for a file labeled W32MKDE.EXE on the second computer. If found, click on this file and shut it down. This file is the Btreive database engine that places file locks and should release them upon exiting from Peachtree. There was a problem where Windows XP did not release this program file from memory in a timely manner and was corrected to a large degree with the release of Windows XP SP2.
The other possible cause for the problem described is a Windows environmental file statement being set to an inadequate level. Go to START and RUN, type CONFIG.NT and click OK. Use Notepad if prompted to open this file. Scroll to the last line and change the line FILES=40 to read FILES=199. Save and Exit. Repat on the second or other computer.
Further to the above, you should disable Windows Write Caching. Right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Hardware Device, click on DISK DRIVES and right click on the hard drive reference. Now click on Properties, and then on the POLICIES Tab. Remove the check mark on the third section of this screen labeled "Enable Write Caching etc".
One or more of the above should releive the error msgs that you have been receiving.

You are not defining what 'something' is but say the other person has to log out. I'm assuming that when this person logs out you are able to do what you want. If that is so do not mess with W32MKDE.EXE as previously suggested as more than likely it is performing correctly. Using task manager to close W32MKDE should only be used if PT crashes or your server reports files are still open but PT is not active. Also, check if peachw.exe is running in task manager before closing w32mkde.exe.
What you are describing is as designed for PT for certain tasks such as changing the current period or adding/modifing a user. It is not normal for things such as accessing customers or ledgers at the same time.

I have seen w32mkde.exe stay open when a third party add on is being used with Peachtree. As long as Peachtree is closed, shutting down w32mkde.exe should not cause a problem though. What I usually recommend is closing all apps and restarting the computer.
