I have been changing the ID of someof our inventory items and the id does not actually change-Peachtree makes a duplicate itme. I assumed "change ID" would have kept the original item intact and would just change the id. What can I do to change these items and not end up with twice as many inventory items.

Sounds like you may be putting in the new id before hitting change id? Bring up the item you want to change in maintain. Once you have it open, then click change id. A new box will open with the old id and a place for the new one. You must be the only person on the system to make a change.
My company has messed up big time....we have somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 items in Inventory, but there is no rhyme or reason as to how the items were set up. I have a way to resolve the issue, but if we have to change 5,000+ items manually with only single user access ...it will take at least a year to accomplish.
Is there some way to change Inventory ID on multiple items in a spreadsheet and then import the changes all at once?

No, you cannot export your Inventory Items, change ID's and re-import, as this would simply create a complete new list of items or simply duplicates of te originals. Peachtree has not provided any shortcut to allow your request.
You can create a new Company, export your lists from the origianl Company, including Inventory Items, changing the Item ID's in Excel, replacing the original ID's, followed by importing all lists into a new Company shell.

There is another option, PawCom, I remember, we had to change a large number of IDs, we did it thru pawCom, depending on how you do it. you could create a table (in Access) that holds the current IDs and another column, that holds the new ID, then run a small custom program, that changes all the IDs

Actually you don't have to write any custom code with PawCom. Just read the data into the tables, make the modifications to the IDs, then select Demo:Update All from the menu bar.
