View Full Version : Converting from DOS to Windows
We are currently using the DOS version 10 PCA to provide a billing service for approximately 150 of our clients which we have set-up as individual companies. We would like to switch to a Windows version but we are not sure which one. However, our main concern is will we be able to convert the data from DOS to Windows without losing anything or spending hours reentering the information? Hope someone can help, we desperatly need to make a decision! Thanks for your help.
Pam,
Why do you mean by "to provide a billing service"? Are you running all the modules or only a couple of them? What exactly are you doing in each of the 150 companies? All of them are using the same modules?
If you are planning to do 150 DOS-to-Windows convesons... I got to tell you that it would not be pretty. I believe that Peachtree sells an utility that provides to do that conversion, but I have never tested it so I don't know how good is it. But, from my previous experience in other upgrades within the Peachtree product line (including version upgrades) I can tell you that a lot of data could be loss in the upgrade (specially in this kind of upgrade), and the work involved in fixing it is worse than entering it all together.
Also, if you are certain to go on this journey, then you should upgrade to the 2002 version (accounting vs. complete accounting depends on the modules/users that you will be using). Mainly because it's the latest version and you wouldn't get support for old versions very soon.
It would be good to know why you want to do the uograde and what features are you looking that PCA-DOS do not provides you with?

I had an authorized support person do my conversion last year (from DOS V11 to Windows 8.02) using the utility program. It only transfers text information (customer names, vendor names, employee names, GL account names, etc). I still had to go through each and every customer, vendor, employee and inventory file and make corrections. Then you have to enter beginning balances for all the customers, vendors, employees and GL accounts. The support person spent the better part of a day doing the conversion, and that did not include entering the corrections and beginning balances. My company is fairly small. Actually if I had to do it over again I would have done the install myself and just entered in the information manually. You may run into this problem converting to any Windows type program...
