We are using Peachtree Complete Accounting and when we upgraded from Offcie 2000 to Office XP the DDE link from Reports to Excel became disabled. Can anybody please help us as to how to enable this again?
The problem is that you have Peachtree Version 8. For Peachtree to work with Office XP you have to buy Version 2002(Version 9)
Microsoft changes the links on the new office when they come out. Peachtree 8 does not have the code to work with Office XP
Welcome to planned obsolescence
Frank,
While Paul is right saying that if you buy Peachtree 2002 the problem will be solved, there's a workaround to that issue. And here is it:
Make sure that you backup your registry before you do this. If you are not familar with the registry, PLEASE have someone do this that is technically astute.
1) Click start-Run then type regedit.
2) Collapse the folder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Application\CurVer
until you see the string value name (Default). Modify the (Default) value to be Excel.Application.9 instead of Excel.Application.10
3) Collapse the folder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Application.10. and Rename this folder to Excel.Application.9.
4)That's It!! Your Excel button should be back in Peachtree. This
will not damage or interfere with any of your Microsoft products or your Peachtree application.

Dear Javier:
Thank you very much for the instructions on how to reactivate the Excell Icon on the Reports Module of Peachtree 8.0. It is now reactivated.
More power to you!

An alternate solution for those afraid to edit the Registry is to right-click on the report that you want to send to Excel, then choose the Excel menu pick there.

David,
No luck right-clicking on reports in Version 7. Just results in a "What's this?" popup.
Javier,
You the man! Works great, thanks.
Just curious though. What's the effect of changing the registry?
What does changing "application.10" to "application.9" really do?
Curtis Rodden
Curtis,
My guess is that it tricks Peachtree (and other programs) into thinking that you have Excel 2000 v9 (instead of 2002 v10). Probably programs use this registry setting for determining compability with Office... I didn't figure this out... so I really don't know.

The right-click only works when you right-click on the actual report name, such as Income Statement. Sounds like you right-clicked the toolbar icon.

Javier,
Sounds reasonable, Excel v9 vs v10, thanks again.
David,
Are you sure you're referring to PAW v7? I triple checked,
I do not get a popup menu by right-clicking on a report name.
Here's exactly what I do:
1. Click on Reports from main menu.
2. Click on a report group, i.e. Inventory.
3. Select specific report, i.e. left click on Inventory Valuation Report. Report is highlighted.
4. Right-click as you suggest. Response: "What's This?".
If you're getting something different in v7 then I have no explanation at all.
Please respond, I'd like very much to get to the bottom of this.

The right-click menu must have been introduced in version 8 or later. I don't have version 7 installed anymore because Peachtree considers it obsolete, so all of my clients are using 8 or later.

David,
OK. That makes me feel a lot better.
As far as version 7 becoming obsolete, yes I understand
that Peachtree is going to stop supporting it (maybe they already
have, I'm not sure). In any case, v7 satisfies our business needs
and have not needed any support for several years. We even update our own tax tables.
With everything I've read and heard
about the system requirements and sluggish behavior
of the latest release, I think we'll stay with what's proven
and familiar.
It seems to me what's really needed is a lot more background
error checking. Inventory valuations getting out of balance (report
vs balance sheet) for instance, which is often caused by
erroneous input. These kind of features may be difficult to
implement but I think they will define the next evolutionary level
of accounting software.
