If you are running Peachtree V7 or later, click on the button near the top of the screen to find out about the Password Recovery Utility.
Robert,
What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peachtree 7V or later does not have a password recovery.
Yours might because you have some add on software.
Password recovery is usually only available through Peachtree or a Peachtree Resource Center.
On 7V or later it is easy to get around the security by deleting permiss.dat and replacing it with another one from another company.
I would like to see Robert’s recovery tool and then find out why he has security at all.
If the key is under the mat, why have a door.

Paul, I'm not sure what your point is.
Peachtree user name security is very light so you shouldn't depend on it if you want true data security. It's intent is to easily control which parts of Peachtree each user has access to in a reasonably trusted environment. A very experienced programmer could figure out the passwords themselves, but we are talking about perhaps a month of work to do so, so that is probably sufficient deterent to keep someone from doing it.
Although you can replace the PERMISS.DAT file in V7 with one that doesn't have passwords, you lose your passwords and have to create them again. With V8.02 and later that has changed because PERMISS.DAT is keyed to the specific company, so you cannot simply replace the file unless you happen to have an old one that was created for the same company before you started using passwords.
The Password Recovery tool, through proprietary technology, has the ability to read the data in the PERMISS.DAT file and display the user names and passwords. This is not functionality that is available to general users of Peachtree in any way.
