I have just had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything. I did a backup of the company files using the backup function in Peachtree. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking about the fact that when I reinstalled the program, my company would no longer be there. Do I have to completely redo all of the company information? Was there another file I should have saved before the reformat that would have the basic company information? If so, it is possible I may have that file on some older backups. I just need to know what to look for. I am using Peachtree Complete Accounting 2002. HELP PLEASE!

Before you can restore a file company into a new installation of Peachtree, you must first establish a blank company to restore into.
To do this, choose File, New, then walk through the prompts of the New Company Wizard. The only field that you must fill out is the Company Name. Choose Build Your Own when asked about the chart of accounts. No other prompts matter...click Next all the way through.
Once your new company is established, choose File, then Restore. Peachtree should restore the data files.
If you perform these steps and are still unable to access your company, please provide more background, including any error messages that you're encountering.

I find the easiest way to do this is to: Reinstall Peachtree. Open a new company using your company name and just a minimum of information (say two minutes worth of typing). Close Peachtree. This will create a company data directory the same as or very similar to what you had before. Copy your backup file to this directory. Restart Peachtree. Your company should come up. Go to File, Restore and you should be back in business.
Good Luck

Thank you for your help. It worked perfectly---almost. I have two companies set up on Peachtree. The smaller one required only one diskette for the backup. The restore went fine. However, the larger company required two diskettes for the backup. It at first kept saying the chosen file (the only one on the diskette) was not a valid Peachtree backup file. It finally accepted it and the restore began. It went through the first diskette fine and asked for the second. It reached 96% completion and then gave the following error message: "An error occurred during restore. The restore process was unsuccessful. Please try again." I have looked at the data that was installed and it all appears to be there. I just have no idea what wasn't installed. Is there any way to tell?

If your data is there, then the restore appears to have been successful. Since it got to 96%, most likely you're OK. This is why I don't like to use floppy disks...they're just generally unreliable. You'll be much better served with a Zip drive or CD burner.
With that said, if you have access to the files on your other computer, I'd create another back-up and try to restore again. Before you do this, create a back-up of the 96% company on the new machine.
If you don't have access to the files, run through every menu pick in Peachtree to open the related dialog boxes. If any key files are missing, you'll find out immediately. Otherwise, if you don't encounter any errors, in my opinion you're probably safe to move ahead.
Good luck!
