View Full Version : Space in Employee name field?

When I print my employee's payroll checks, a space appears in the middle of the employee name field (at approximately the 18th character). I cannot see any way to correct this. When I go into design mode, the field is selected as a whole, there does not appear to be a space in the layout. Any thoughts as to how to correct this? The checks of those affected look unprofessional.

Is it all employees? Did you check in their record to make sure it is typed correctly? Does it do this on reports as well or just checks?

Peachtree now breaks the employee name into First Name, Last Name and Middle Initial. Internally the size for these fields is 15, 20 and 1 character, respectively.
If you have a particularly long name maybe it can't parse the name properly and breaks it into pieces in the wrong place.

The problem occurs on the stubs (both employee's and my copy), and in a different spot on the actual check. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the length of names, but the printed stubs look like the following:
Candace A. McDonn ell (s/b McDonnell)
Jennifer A. Robin son (s/b Robinson)
The check face has a space in a different spot:
Candace A. McDo nnell
Jennifer A. Rob inson
The actual space is a bit smaller (not quite one character's width), but it still stands out to anyone looking closely.
I've noticed it for a while now, but it's only been a nuisance and I couldn't figure out why it was happening. One of the owners noticed the space when signing checks a few weeks ago and asked why it was there. I was hoping that someone had seen a similar issue.

Any chance this might be a printer driver issue? What make/model printer are you using, and do you have the latest driver installed?

It is breaking with both names at the 18th character on the stub and 16th for both on the check. We don't have any names that go out that far in total, but I will check with sample data and see if I get the same results.

I'm using an HP laserjet 1200 series, and it's a local printer. I checked again with HP support and it appears as though the driver is the most current.

Have you tried changing the font? I have seen this kind of thing happen in word processing programs. Probably a long shot, but can't hurt to try.
