I have the need to track mutiple locations for the same part number. Can I have multiple locations for the exact same item number?

Peachtree Accounting doesn't support multiple inventory item locations. A client of mine that needed such functionality recently converted to Image Accounting, which does offer this functionality.

Keep in mind that Peachtree is a very generic accounting package, and sells for a nominal price, compared with other accounting packages on the market. It offers good value, but those with specialized needs often run into brick walls.

Good luck!

We are just finishing a custom application for a client in the service industry using PawCom. The application maintains total inventory in Peachtree but allows the client to control separate inventory on his service trucks including tagging specific items with serial numbers. The application also allows the client to create work orders with automatic inclusion of labor and travel expense and automatic insertion into Peachtree of completed workorders as invoices.

If you are interested in a custom add-on to solve your problem, please contact me.

But, if you still want to try to use Peachtree, there is a solution. It can be a little messy, but it does work. Let;s say you had two locations - Dallas and Rowlett. For every piece of inventory, such as ANY1053 (this could be anything), you will show the designation for the location so that Dallas items would be ANY1053-DAL and Rowlett items would be ANY1053-ROW.

If you purchase 100 items and split them between the two stores, you will use two line items on the Purchases form. To transfer items between stores, takes two transactions in the Inventory Adjustments function.

This is a very low cost solution to this problem. Ongoing, it takes a few extra seconds for data entry, but it takes less time than if you were using an outside inventory control program. Other programs can do inventory better, but Peachtree has its strenghths also. The bottom line is that you must weigh the benefits of another program against the cost of converting to another accounting program - a minimum of three months of parallel systems, the learning curve, and the effect of probable overtime, etc.

Deborah,

I certainly would never suggest someone change accounting systems if they can work with the one they have. I'm not sure if you got the point that I was mentioning a very flexible add-on solution that integrates tightly with Peachtree and was designed specifically to solve the problem of moving inventory around to multiple locations without having to create any additional accounts.

We developed the solution for a company that wanted non-accounting people to quickly be able to move inventory to service trucks and build work orders for each driver. Completed work orders are written to Peachtree as invoices simply by clicking a single button.

Robert,

Believe me, I was not knocking your product at all. In fact, I have down-loaded PAWCOM to look at it whenever I have a free moment. Maybe now that my latest book has been sent for printing and my husband is starting to recuperate from an emergency quadruple bypass, I will be able to find some time.

Because I work with a lot of smaller companies, where owners often do not see the value of add-ons (Heck, I've been trying to get one client with 4 workstations to put in a server for FOUR years) I often have to find work-arounds. Also, many of my clients are 1-person offices such as lawncare, electricians, artists, etc. That such upgrades are very painful.

I would LOVE to use add-on or custom developed features for my clients, but because of who I work with, I have had to become an expert at getting the actual program to do the work that it wasn't designed to do. I've used fields, such as the Sales Rep, Delivery, ets to report very sophisticated, unassociated tasks to assist clients.

As an MS Access developer in additin to being a Peachtree expert, I personally love custom solutions myself.
