How do you increase size of memo field in "write checks"?

I need to increase the number of characters in the memo field in the "Write Checks" area. I have increased the characters allowed in the template for my printed checks but I cannot put more than 30 characters in the memo field. If you know how to do this, please let me know.

The memo data field is hard coded. As such it is not subject to expansion.
