View Full Version : complete-08 will not work without network
On my Vista laptop, Peachtree will not start if there is no Internet connection. At work with a wired connection everything is fine. At home, with a wireless connection everything works as well. However, if I'm at a site without internet, I get an error meassage on startup that says I need to reboot. Peachtree support told me that sql needs an IP address to start, so I tried hardcoding an address instead of using DHCP and still have the problem.
thanks

Peachtree support told me that sql needs an IP address to start,
Huh???? Peachtree doesn't use SQL yet. Or did I miss some breaking news?

Peachtree 2007 & 2008 uses Pervasive SQL Ver9.0.

Doh - I'm an idiot. Maybe I should try thinking before I post!!
I just always refer to it as Pervasive, as opposed to My SQL which is supposedly coming down the pike.
So Rick - do you have any insight on Rosa's problem? Is it a Vista problem?
I just took my XP machine off the network and 2008 works fine for me.

I've never heard of this. I run Peachtree without an Internet connection when traveling, and it works fine. Of course, I'm not running Vista, so maybe it's an issue with Vista and Peachtree and the Internet.

XP works fine, it's a problem only on VISTA. Telephone support said it's a "Known Problem" and couldn't offer any more help. It seems Pervasive SQL needs an IP address to start. However, hard-coding an IP, GW, Subnet Mask and DNS doesn't fix it, so I guess it more than just needing an IP address.

A quick work around for the Pervasive SQL IP is to edit the hosts file.
In Windows Explorer, browse to:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Double click on the file named "hosts".
Open it with Notepad and add the following, replacing "PC-NAME" with the name of your laptop:
127.0.0.1 PC-NAME
Now save the changes and PeachTree should now work w/o a network connection.

Peachtree 2007 & 2008 uses Pervasive SQL Ver9.0.
I don't believe this is entirely correct. As near as we can tell the database is the same old Btrieve database that they have always used and it appears that they are still using Btrieve to access the data. There are a few SQL files in the company folder now, but those all seem to contain supporting data that is not essential to the central accounting functionality of Peachtree.
Some of the confusion here is that Pervasive has de-emphasized the role of Btrieve in their products. They now stress the SQL nature of the layers they have built on top of Btrieve and include a SQL engine with their product.
It seems unlikely that Peachtree could have designed a new SQL database with a Btrieve structure that was exactly like their earlier databases. And even if they could, this would have been a perfect time to clean up some of the weird stuff in their records, which didn't happen. I think it is more likely that they implemented a few new peripheral functions in SQL because it was easier to do that way than to develop the functions calling Btrieve. And that also would mean they could say "we are now using SQL" without mentioning "only for a few new non-accounting features."
