In the past we used "1" as the part number for many items. We now have a unique part number and bill of material for all items. i tried to change the items to the correct ones for all historical transactions in the sales order journal by exporting the entire journal, making the changes and reimporting the same CSV file, but it gave me an error that says "This sales order number on line 5 is already in use". Am I unable to modify existing sale order journal data through import export? Is there a way around this?

You can change Item ID's in Maintain Inventory Items (Icon - Change ID). When you perform an ID change all documents including historic transactions are comparably changed. It is not necessary to perform any additional tasks.
