Prices in Inventory item and Sales item

I am having a problem getting my prices to extend when I enter a Purchase order or an Invoice. I am putting the item price in when I set up the Item but when I enter a Purchase the price wont come up in the price colomn. Sometimes it works and sometimes it wont. I know this is simple, What am I doing wrong?

Usually this area is filled in with whatever your last cost is. Is this a stock or non-stock item (check maintain, inventory items to confirm)?
