I need to have two identical companies running in the same computer. My client wants his company XYZ Inc. Preaquisition and XYZ Inc. postaquisition. My problem is when you "open company" you have XYZ Inc. and XYZ Inc. I am afraid that the bookkeeper will put transactions in the wrong company by mistake. I know there is an easy work around but I cannot figure it out. I don't want to do it by password protection. I want to have two different names come up when the menu is open. Ideas? Thanks!

Go to Maintain Company Information form and edit the Company Name to reflect pre or post acquisition. E.g. "XYZ Inc. Pre" and "XYZ Inc. Post."

I tried this and it did not make any difference after I restored a company file fromXYZ Inc. and then I went to the menu and "opened companies" and the XYZ Inc. was there twice. Also, what would happen to invoices and vendors etc? Thanks!

I guess my question is: what drives the company name in the "open company" menu, and and how can this be changed without changing the essential functions of company name in the program itself? Anyone? Thanks!
What drives the Company Name you click on is the Company name you put in Maintain/Company information of each company.
This is pulled out of the company.dat file that resides in each company's folder and displays it when Company browsing in Peachtree. Changing this to something different will be reflected the next time you open Peachtree and either Open Existing Company or browse to it through File/Open Company.

I wanted to create a duplicate company so I could "play" with the "Test CO". First I created a new company by only setting up the basis company info and named company "Test Co" vs "Co" for live company. Then I copied all the data files from the "live" company data directory to the new test co data directory except for the 3 files that were named "company.???". This seems to work for my testing purposes.
Hope helps

I think you got it backwards. You rename the company after you restore or copy files to a new folder. I suggest what you do is place your test company in a different path and use the browse button on the Peachtree open company form to browse to the test company. After it starts up, change its name to indicate it is the test company.

If you want to keep the company name, and afraid of mixing up 2 companies, you've to put the company folders as subfolders under different folders, like:
c:\peachw\data1\yourcompany
c:\peachw\data2\yourcompany
