We are using Peachtree Complete 2008 on Windows XP Pro. I have a student that is trying to backup to a USB drive. The restore then asks her to insert disk 1 of 3 and press enter. Hitting enter does nothing and she is unable to restore her work. She has lost countless hours of effort. My other 10 students are not having any problem. I have tried copying her backup to my USB drive and I get the same error message on a different XP Pro machine. Any thoughts before she drops the class or flunks.

I would have her try a different USB drive. It sounds like PT is having trouble recognizing the drive and this is causing errors when the backup file is written.
The other thing to try is to copy her backup file to the XP machine. Then change the file extension to ".zip" and try extracting the files using Windows.

Copy the file to the local machine, such as the desktop or my documents, and then try to restore it.

I agree with Tom. I never backup or restore directly to/from a USB drive. I always go by way of C:

We were able to get the restore done by copying to the desktop and restoring from there. Seems to be a time consuming workaround and one that is subject to being missed. PT is the only application I have seen that doesn't handle USB drives well. We used to backup and restore to 2 or 3 3 1/2" diskettes daily without problems.
