I am designing a bridge between a time reporting system to import labor billing into Sales Journal. Later we will use this same data to import the labor expense and units into the Project.
1. On the sales journal screen you can deselect all and only select fields that are needed. However in Help files "Sales Journal Fields" it seems certain fields are required. If I deselect required import fields and try to import without these fields will the import work? 2 fields in particular - "Date Due" and "Sales Tax Authority" are confusing. Due Date is unrelevant until an invoice is later created from the data imported into Sales Journal and should be calculated based on the Customer Terms. All our services are tax exempt and will have no Tax Authority?
2. Once Fields are deselected can the import file "ignore" the position of the data being imported. IE - Say we only want to import Customer ID, Date, Quote #, and Description can our import file contain only 4 items to be imported?
Thanks in advance for any assistance

John,

Deselecting REQUIRED fields when importing data can be quite dangerous at certain times. Although you may not feel you need the fields that are what Peachtree considers required, Peachtree may need those specific fields populated in order to work within Peachtree properly. You may still need to set certain defaults to specific fields in the record so when Peachtree encounters these records at a later date it can process them correctly.

As far as ignoring specific fileds overall depending. Fixed field lengths and deliminated fields will determine where the data is placed during the import.

I personally do not like to import data to any database unless I know the database COLD. Working with Peachtree causes me to really double think in importing data. Under normal conditions depending on the database although you may need to "hit" a specific field in one record you my need to populate another field in another record in a different file within the same database with other information or the same information. The way that Peachtree's database is layed out I HESITATE in importing anything IMHO.

Sorry, for not giving you a specific answer but can not say yes or no to your question without first examing eac specific field carefully and then determine what other fields are needed to populate other than the ones you mentioned.

You must include the required fields. In some cases, the required field can be blank, such as in the case of the sales tax authority. Your best bet is to fill out a sample transaction in one of the sample companies, then export this transaction to a text file. You can then see which fields get filled out.

Regarding your second question, no you can't do this. Your import file must exactly match the import mask that you save, which in turn must include required fields.
