We are used Peachtree Complete 2002 with 5 networked users. Our system is also slowing down especially when you want to recall some reports or posting a reconciliation. It take about one hour to retrieve.
The Grand Total in the Stadistic is 469438. The JrnlRow is 399410, the Jrnl Header is 50332. The five networked computers are: Windows NT Server 4 with Intel Pentium II-350MHz with 256MB RAM (Peachtree is in Mirror Set with 30.5GB free), 2-Intel Pentium III with 64MB and Windows 98, 1-Celeron with 128MB and Windows 98 and 1-Intel Pentium with 64MB and Windows 98.
Although running Peachtree locally in the server, produces slow reports.

Wow. We need a little more info. In your company, go to Help then File Statistics. What is the Grand Total number at the bottom of the window? Also what type of server OS do you use, and finally, how fast are your machines. If it takes an hour to pull data into a report, sounds like you have ALOT of data.

Make a backup and try running a purge over the weekend. Yours is probably one of the largest databases using Peachtree that I have seen. If a purge does not reduce your data to at least 200 mb you should look into getting a medium or large accounting package.

I think it is time for you to look into other bigger software.

Our total database space is only 84444 byte and we already experience data slowing down. If your is more than 100000. Then the answer is look for other SQL base accounting software such as ACCPAC, Breat Plains and ....

However, for key in of new data, there is no problem, the problem is only happend when you want to recall or retrieve your data.

No solution. Even though you use purge, It will only help you a little bit and this is not the solution.

May not be a solution (depending on how you define solution) but a purge may remove enough they can limp along until they get another software package.

Yep. Your data is HUGE. 150 megs over a network is stretching it. Your's is 3 times that much. Take the above guys/gals' above advice and do a purge and then consider upgrading to a more mid-sized acctg. package. If your data is the result of many years of PTree data (at least 5) then an alternative would be to purge, then rebuild the company using the import/export function. This will cut down on the size considerably, but only if you bring in the last couple of years worth of lists and journals. If you have less than 5 years of data in this dataset, then you are growing way too fast for Peachtree.

Some other factors contributes to the slowness:

1. Server speed ( cpu and harddisk speed, what kind of mirror type it is? )
2. Network performance ( use 100baseT network at least, that means your network card, switch, etc. should be 100baseT. Make sure they're set as "full duplex" as that can make a big difference )
3. Workstation speed ( consider upgrade cpu, add more RAM )
4. Antivirus ( antivirus software can significantly slow down your system, try to skip scanning the Peachtree folder as very unlikely these files will be infected )

Hope these help.

We also encountered the same problem. Large Db on the network causes a slowdown. The only way we could avoid the problem is to move from online to distributed while maintaining Peachtree. If online is a non-negotiable, then you have to go for a different accounting package.

Melvin,

I'm curious on what do you mean by online vs. distributed?

Millie,

You should be definitely looking for another accounting package, not only you have a huge db, but you have 5 users accessing Peachtree... IMHO that's too much for Peachtree.

I know that people have managed to run more than 5 users on Peachtree (I have done it)... but the performance goes down and the number of errors goes up. That's the reason why I liked Peachtree DOS a lot... it never complained about too much work!!! Giving some more thought on it... that was also the reason I ended with PT2000  !!! Not-so-great idea.

What spteps do I have to follow in order to rebuild the company using the import/export function?

The online help files for Peachtree offer guidance. If you tackle this on your own, be sure to make a separate back up after each and every import. It's easy to make a mistake toward the end, then if you haven't backed up after each import, you have to start from ground zero.

Your other option is to retain a consultant to do this for you.

Good luck!

Sylvester,

1) Open the program
2) Click Options
3) Exclusions
4) Click New
5) Add the path of the Data and Program folder

Congratulate yourself for a job well done... then grab a cup of coffee and a couple of dunkin' donuts munchkins.
