I have Version 2000 at work and Version 8 at home. I have a ptb file I want to use to restore data on my home machine. I set up a blank company but when I try to restore I get "Not a Valid Peachtree Backup File" Now what????

Try using a zip tool like Winzip to open the ptb file, if you can't, the backup is corrupted. If you can, make sure the program version ( including the service patch number ) are the same.

If you copied the data to a CD for transport, then the problem is probably that the files have all been marked readonly. If that is the case then after copying to your home machine go to Windows Explorer, select all files in the folder, right click, and uncheck READONLY.

Thank you. I checked the file is not read only. Should version 8 software be able to read a version 9 backup file?

No, you can't go backwards. You also can't go forward between versions without converting the data. In any case, you absolutely cannot read a version 9 company in version 8. You'll need to establish the same Peachtree platform in all locations.

I was afraid of that. Well at least I know the answer now and will go get a copy of version 9. Thank you all for your help.

And don't mix the flavor of Peachtree. You can't move data between Peachtree Accounting for Windows and Peachtree Complete Accounting for Windows even if they are the same version.

FYI, Peachtree Complete 9 has been discontinued in favor of Peachtree 2003, so you'll probably have to upgrade at both locations, unless you can find a license for version 9 on eBay or another source.
