Going from PT 2006 to PT 2009 - I get the following error message.
Peachtree cannot open this company. The most common cause for this error is that an old version of Btrieve is running. For detailed instructions about correcting this problem, please click the Help button below.
Btrieve is a file handler engine used by several communication applications and backup utilities. Peachtree Accounting can sometimes have problems starting while an application using an older version of Btrieve is also running.

First, try closing other applications that might be using Btrieve.

Next, try rebooting your computer and then opening Peachtree before opening any other program. If you still get the error, it is likely that some software is loading on startup that uses Btrieve.

If you're unable to resolve this error, contact Peachtree Support or visit the Peachtree Knowledge Center at www.peachtree.com.

I can't find a solution on knowlwdgebase and it's a pain in the neck to have to reboot when I'm working. When I first installed 2009 someone gave me a solution and it had to do with removing a process in task manager but I can't remember what it was. Anyone know?

With version 2007, btrieve was discontinued and Peachtree now uses pervasive. In the task manager, end task on w32mkde.exe to quit btrieve. End task on w3dbsmgr.exe to end pervasive.

Thanks Marques!!! That's what I was looking for.

Is there a way to do or not do something in msconfig / startup that will prevent having to do this every time I want to go back & forth from one to the other??

The two database managers do not both load-they conflict with each other, so I don't think so.

Prior to the recent Peachtree problems which began with Zone Alarm and then my trying to reinstall & uninstall PT, I was able to flip back and forth between 2006 & 2009 at will. Back when I installed 2009 about a year ago I had the btrieve error and someone, on here I believe, helped me with it - had me do something and I can't remember what, but I didn't have to do that Task manager thing in order to go from one to the other. I've searched under every keyword I can think of but can't find any posts of it. It's like I'm in the Twilight Zone :)
