I have a company wich I import form PT Complete rel 8.0 to 2002 rel 9.0. Great import from rel 8.0 to 9.0 until the problems started.

1. I have a network with a Colbalt Qub3 3 (linux server) with 3 Win98 and 1 Win2kPro computers on a 10/100Mbps Switch. When I used PT rel 8.0 we did not get any error and never needed to restore any backup that we did everyday on a ScSI tape backup that I have connected to my Qube 3 server (for more than 2 years). Now that I use the PT rel 9.0, installing I got a "long file name not support by the server" error message, wich I never got on the rel 8.0. Seems like Btrieve is not the same on the rel 9.0. What I did?...I share my Win2kPro hard disk and install it, whe it finish copy/paste the data on the sever and remap the network drive to corresponding drive and it worked...for a few days. Now sometimes I get data error, I/O errors and the last one is that my PT backup file is just 1K file size. My others backups file are 200MB and from today I only 1 of backup.

Did some have a network operation similar to this one that can provide any idea to correct this behavior of the rel 9.0?...tech support did not have any idea on solving is one.

Thanks.

TB.

A 1K backup file is essentially an empty file. Good backup files are typically several megabytes for reasonable data sets. Perhaps the long file name is the problem.

The default backup behavior is to include the company name in the backup file name. However, you can specify a shorter name when you do the backup. Give this a try. Perhaps your V8 had been set to do this by default.

BTW, V8 and V9 use exactly the same Btrieve components.

If you are getting I/O errors that means that you have either developed network problems or you are having system problems either on your server or client. Make sure all systems are defragmented.

Thanks Robert

This is exactly what we do every day, include the company, for example mycompany080102.ptb, wich the numbers are for the day of the backup. I check the disk of the server and the local computer (Win98SE)..no problems, the program on the PC look good, no network problems, everything look great, just that since Monday we are just getting 1K file for the backup. Also I checked the audit trail and they are no type of log that can create such behavior, just inventory adjustment and sale invoices, just a regular day of work. I will reinstall the software to see if I get any success and keep you guys posted.
