I have an old version of FAS fixed assets that has all of my fixed assets. I'm not sure how old, but in the 'help/about' it lists the dates of 1993-1998, but no version #.

I would like to import this old data into the new 2003 FAS that is included in PCA 2003. I do not find an export option in the old software and have been unable to find any bridge or conversion software on the net.

Does anyone know if an export/import can be accomplished or should I just plan on rekeying all the assets into PCA 2003?

Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem. I'm sorry I don't have the specifics at hand, but I seem to remember that there was an import program that was supposed to do what you are looking for. I remember trying it out, but wasn't real happy with format or the results. I think it asked you to manually map each field from the old program into a designated field in the new one. I didn't spend much time with it because I thought it was very cryptic and wondered why it wouldn't already be set up to map the field conversion properly. It may work fine and I just didn't spend enough time with it. It was either part of the new 2003 Fixed Assets program (an import/conversion option there) or it was a separate one-time program on the PT 2003 Complete CD. Sorry, I don't remember which. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will weigh in on this but wanted to get something back to you before you started a lot of unnecessary keying. If we find out enough about how this works, maybe I'll do it to.

Just purchased 2003 and there was a yellow sheet in the box stating many last minute notes.

One of these was the fact that the new "FAS" Fixed asset system is unable to import data from the existing FA program.

The suggestion by PT on this addendum was to NOT install the FAS version, and wait until they devloped and import utility - continuing to run the old version for fixed assets.

Kind of reminds me of the old days when they suggested to "start off with First Accounting - and then move up to complete"

Which I did, only to find that there was no way to import a First Accounting company into PCA!

Has this changed??

Further to the point:

credit PT Kbase:

8 Have any product modules changed?
Yes. We now offer a new Fixed Assets module – FAS™ for Peachtree®*. FAS for Peachtree is produced by an industry leader, Best Software, and provides similar functionality to the Fixed Asset application previously shipped with Peachtree Complete. With FAS for Peachtree you can track up to seven books of detail including tax and can track up to 200 assets. However, if you are currently using the Peachtree Fixed Assets module, we recommend that you do not immediately install FAS for Peachtree when you install Peachtree 2003. We will be offering a conversion at a later date, and will notify you when this is available.

Beautiful!

Thanks for the info. It was late last night when I posted and I didn't have time to do any further research. Apparently I bought my 2003 before the dreaded "yellow sheet". Anyway, I do remember that in my infinite wisdom, I trusted PT and went ahead and did the full install/upgrade (including FAS FA) only to find that I was no longer able to access my old FA records. Panicked, I eventually located the old PT FA program, created a new desktop link to that, and once again found my FA data.

Frustrated, I restored my old version of PT, reinstalled data from the backup I did just prior to starting conversion, and then did the upgrade again without FAS. Wish I'd had the "yellow sheet". Now I'm not sure I'll even do the conversion since my present FA program does everything I need it to do using the KISS principle.

Yeah, for the once a year we book our depreciation, I'm happy staying with the old version of FA. Works fine for me.

I don't bother running it up every month - I just run a depreciation "Projection" report as of 12/31 sometime in January and add all my new assets for the previous year then, when I know my 179 situation. (all those december decisions!!)

I enter the info manually into PT via the ledger - had some bad experiences letting FA send it over itself.

I do have one question....

What is FALIMIT.DAT, and why does it always seem to go missing, necessitating a re-install of FA???

I can't answer your question about FAlIMIT.DAT but I have the same problem. Hopefully, we'll get some feedback from others on this particular problem.

Yeah, It must be reference data of rates, or something because my FA data is fine.

I actually keep a copy of the file in another folder to make replacing it part of my automatic routine for loading FA!!

If I was a cynic, I'd assume that PT deletes it's so that you have to subscribe to an update service

falimit.dat holds tax info for the old fixed assets program. You often will get erroneous messages about it missing if the datapath is either set off the root, has more than 8 characters in any directory, or has a space in any directory.

Thanks, but the messages are not erroneous...

It really just vanishes!!

I can search the whole drive and it's gone...

Not a huge problem, just curious.

If you have files that are just vanishing then you might want to check for a virii or someone deleting them.

As of 04/08/03 Peachtree has of yet to offer a conversion utility for FAS. My firm however, after much moaning and complaining, was offered a "beta" conversion done by "best Software". The catch though, is that we'd have to send them a total backup of our company data, the whole thing, without any written agreement as to what security precautions were in place, where the data might end up, and was to have access to it while in their care. I almost laughed out loud. So it seems I'll be waiting another six months for the "privilege" to use the functionality that I've already paid for.
