Can you give me more details about the configuration of your network and the server platform in all 3 locations? Such as, is it Windows 2000 server network, etc.

Dear Jack

Thanks for your reply.

We are currently using Windows 98 and each location PCA is link through Peer-To-Peer with one pc as database terminal.

What we are thinking now is whether it is possible to post batch posting direct to our HQ server from location workstation. Say we key in daily transaction and only end of the day we post the transaction back to HQ through internet.

Howver, we don't know how to setup up the network and what is the step.

Please assist.

Thanks

Batch posting directly through internet in this way is not recommended. Experience shown this is unstable and may corrupt your company database in HQ. ( I think someone experience this in this forum before )

We've a client using RAS with Windows server, having a lease line connection to update the HQ. It's more reliable but the cost is much higher.

Internet connection is much cheaper, esp. if broadband service is available in your place, you may set up a VPN connection.

One work-around solution is to export your transactions and send them to headquarter and update in batch. You may find using Netmeeting or pcAnywhere useful.

Jack.

Are you mean that we export all the database, such as sales journal, purchase journal.... and sent to HQ for importing. However, if this is the method, we found it very difficult to import to HQ database as sometime there are error appear and we don't what is went wrong.

Please assist.

Then, a permanent connection may be a better solution. I'm not familiar with your place, is it easy to estabish lease line or VPN connection in your place?

hello chua

i have also been looking at a few alternatives for remote branch locations. this seems to be a popular topic at the moment.

at the minimum, you will need a fast connection. alternatives are telekom's isdn and tmnet streamyx.

isdn will give you 64 to 128 kbps connection. you will need an isdn line and modem for this.

streamyx will give you 128/256 kbps (soho version). price is rm280 per month with 120 hrs surfing time and modem.

for file sharing, you may want to consider an internet drive method rather than a VPN. have a look at www.mangomind.com. the advantage of these two methods, rather than direct dial-up, is that both provides automated data synchronisation.

Thanks RISC Team.

I am trying the remove access using VPN and It seem that we failed to established the line. It could be something wrong with the setting. It is a good idea to use Web Disk, however, due to company P&C data. It is quite difficult for us to move this move.

Anyway thanks for the reply and currently I am also trying other method. I like let you know when I get it.

Best Regards
