I searched this fourm and could not find a thread on this subject.

So now is the time to ask...

Is there any news about Peachtree resolving the issues with some of Windows patches that causes issues in Peachtree?

Microsoft is pushing to get the next service pack out for Windows XP (SP2) that is heavily biased toward security which is a great thing to be doing but with most service packs all of the previous patches will be rolled in. If this is the case it might not be possible to remove Microsoft Patch - Q810577 or the others that are mentioned in this forum. I am sure some of you know how easy it is to remove service packs from operating systems.

If you would like to read more about the service pack you can either go to CNet news or Microsoft.

Thanks in advance....

Which issues are you refering to? The slowness when closing or slowness overall?

Tom,

I see that you have posted various answers to the patch issue. In one thread you say you have your system running fine with the patches yet in other threads you suggest that the user look up the patches that need to be removed.

My system runs fine and I do not have the patches stated in the threads applied. I have tested the the use of the patches and Peachtree definitely exhibits the problem on closing.

All I know is that Service Packs cause problems for those who are unprepared or who have not tested out their systems. I am lucky that I only have to worry about my system. If I had a large number of clients that have the automatic Windows update feature kicking in at 3:00AM in the morning performing installs I would probably have some trouble sleeping.

Maybe I should restate my questions a different way...

Does Peachtree acknowledge that there are problems with certain Microsoft Patches being used in Windows XP?

If the answer is yes, is Peachtree working on an update?

I have also decided that I am going to perform a clean install on my Windows 2003 test server and Windows XP Pro workstation. I will download the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Beta from the MSDN web site and see if there is any damage.

I also have to poke some fun here...

My IT department will probably not share the info (I am my IT department).

My IT group would not give specifics for free but said it is an outstanding issue with XP and programs that delete files when they close. They said they found the information in the Microsoft Knowledgebase. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Part of the problem is that p'tree always recommended using files and buffers even through ver 2003. I don't know for sure if that has changed for 2004. I have edited the config.nt so that it reads files=250 instead of files=40. Sometimes that works. At times i change the registry. I put that in an earlier post.

I did find the pic that I created. You can change the values using regedit

In my discussions with p'tree, sometimes uping these values also help p'tree to run faster

The It group at Software-Link is a seperate division. They would not give me step by step but did give a general answer.

The reason I asked which issues is that the slowness on Peachtree closing on XP seems to be an issue with XP. It occurs in any program that must delete multiple files upon close, such as the .lck and .ptl files in Peachtree.

The other issue I have seen is WinXP just being slow overall. That may be related to patches or to settings in XP.

I am using winXP Pro with all patches on my personal laptop and have experienced no problems, then again I am pulling data local so it may be a problem with data on the network.

You would need to contact Peachtree to find out if they are trying to work on any of these issues.

This sounds exactly like the problem I am having with Peachtree 2004 on our system.

We have 5 workstations running XP pro on a LAN with a Windows 2000 server. When we shut down peachtree it hangs. This is because peachtree does not properly shut down the LAN connections and leaves them open.

I discovered this when we started a new backup proceedure. The backup would not back up peachtree because peachtree was still connected and flaged as in use.

In order to backup requires us to compleatly shutdown the workstations. This is the only way the connections are terminated.

I have contacted the Peachtree tech support and their fix is to remove Microsoft security patches. They say that this is Microsoft's problem and that they have no plans to provide a patch for this.

The problem here is that by leaving the connections open to Peachtree leaves the server open to hacking through the internet.

This doesn't make any sense to me because Peachtree is the only "Server/workstation" LAN that hangs. All other programs running on the LAN close down normally.

I havn't removed any Microsoft security patches because we do alot of work over the internet and through e-mail. So removing security from our system is out of the question and as you are probibly aware in this day and age we need all the networking security we can get.

The only thing I can tell you for certain at this point is to not remove the patches and learn to live with the problem as we have and keep posting the problem with Peachtree.
