We install products that we cut down from sheet and linear stock. One sheet or length may yield multiple jobs or after one job the remainder may be be set aside as useable off-haul. How do we track this in peachtree?

When you purchase your materials, receive them in the smallest unit that you use them in. For example, if you purchase an 8 foot length and you use it by the foot, then receive a quantity of 8 at whatever the cost per foot is.

When you use it on a job, I would do an inventory adjustment to relieve however much you use and code it to the appropriate job.

Hope this helps.

That definately helps! Thank you. If I enter my inventory like that, when I go to quote a job is there any way that I can quote it without showing a unit cost like when I receive it? Does that make any sense? Here is an example:

I receive a piece of shelving that is 12 linear feet. I receive it as 12 items at 1 foot each with the unit cost per foot. When I quote and invoice a job can I show the item as 1 piece of shelving at $30.00 instead of 8 linear feet @ $3.75 each?

Second question: When I use a piece of 12 ft long shelving for a job but only 10 ft is billed to the job and 2 ft are waste - how do I account for the waste per job?

Thank you for your help!

With my method of using inventory adjustments to charge the inventory to the job, then you can put whatever you want on the quote/invoice - just don't use the actual item numbers of the inventoried items. You don't have to use any inventory code, you can just put a qty, type in a description and your prices.

With your scenario of 12' foot material with 2' waste - just make your adjustment for the whole 12' against the job.

Do you do consulting by phone? I would be interested in getting some more information about how you would setup an inventory system for our company.
