I will be working remotely this summer and need to access my company file using DSL & VPN.

In addition to changing the ini file on my hard drive to point to the share drive the company file is located, is there anything else I need to do?

Now that the ini file is pointing to the share location, how do I access a company file that is on my hard drive?

Would I be better off just copying the contents of the company folder to my hard drive and then copy them back each night when I am done. The other bookkeeper will be updating the files during the day and I will only work on the files at night.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Ugh. I think there has been a lot of discussion about this - but I can't find the thread.

I have three people working on my file. The only thing we have been able to do is FTP the file to each other when we are done. We take turns using it - we restore from the last person's file - do our work - backup our file - send it on to the next person. I know this is dangerous, but it seems to be the only way we've been able to do it.

Remote access scares me because of security reasons.

What kinds of problems have you encountered while trying to use the files over the LAN? I can pull up the file without any problems but I am concerned with data corruption. If that is not an issue than I'm okay.

I recommend that you use www.gotomypc.com to access your data files. Transferring back-ups of the company data around various machines is a risky proposition. The best scenario is to use remote control software to connect directly to a machine where the data files are located. pcAnywhere is another option, but GoToMyPC really works great.

I have already been messed up once by forgetting to restore the updated backup on to my machine before entering new transactions. My solution at work was to put the company files on a network share drive and access them from any of the machines that I might end up using (desk, conference room and front desk) depending on what is happening at work.

What I am attempting to do from home is to connect to the work LAN via vpn (my only option) and access that network share just like I do at the office. I modifed my peachtree ini file to point to the share drive. I can see both the company files on the share dirve as well as the company files on my hard drive.

Is this going to cause any data corruption problems or am I just being paranoid? This should be just like accesing the company file via the work intranet, right?

I don't work with VPNs, so I'm not a good resource to verify what you' trying to do. I've had excellent success with GoToMyPC, so I go that route.
