Hi-

My Aunt runs a small business that uses peachtree Accounting Complete Plus version 6.0. She is getting a new computer that has Windows XP installed. I am computer literate but not familiar with accounting software.

Anyway, I have a couple questions. First off, what software upgrade path should she pursue? What versions would have the same basic functions as her old version but compatible with XP? Remember I am not familiar with this software!

Secondly, would her old data files (from the win 95 install) be able to be transferred to the new version? If so do you have any tips or warnings on how I should do this?

My aunt is clueless when it comes to computers so please help me out so I can give her a hand.

The best choice would be Peachtree Complete 2002, since Peachtree Complete Plus 6 is of the same series as Peachtree Complete 2002. Be careful you can't upgrade Peachtree Complete Accounting to Peachtree Accounting.

Plus 6 is already a multiuser license, however Peachtree Complete 2002 has multi-user license ( ValuePack ) and Complete 2002 standalone. So, you need to decide which one you want to go. It depends on how many stations you have. If just one user, of course the best choice is upgrade to Peachtree Complete 2002 standalone.

Probably the data is in the folder like c:\peachw. To migrate, make a copy of the contents of c:\peachw first. Copy everying inside c:\peachw to the new machine, then install the new Peachtree to the same folder c:\peachw. Don't worry, the data won't be overrided. Anyway, you got the backup.

I recently upgraded to 2002 Complete and regretted it so much that I changed to Quickbooks Pro 2001.

(Mostly out of anger over Peachtree's notorious LACK of customer service (I'm a former 5-year user)

In fairness, Quickbooks is running the same scam - "upgrade cheap - sell all the bells and whistles like the tax service and forms (the biggest rip-off of all) but BOTH programs have ditched the ability to edit forms to fit your own checks, etc. NOW - you HAVE TO buy THEIR forms only.

Of course.....I see the trick now....like PC hardware (printers, especially) they sell the program cheaper than before and FORCE YOU to buy their products before they will function properly.

So, what was a $120 piece of software is NOW $400-500 dollars. And this would be okay if THEY TOLD YOU UP FRONT. BUt not so. If I ran my small business this way - I'D BE OUT OF BUSINESS.

To the original poster -

You don't have to upgrade if you don't want to. V6 runs fine on Win XP....I even have a V5 running on it as well.

To JDaniel,

Peachtree DOES allow you to customize all their forms including checks and invoices. You do not have to buy their forms. You also don't have to buy their tax service, if you're willing to invest a little time into setting up the taxes yourself in the company tax file.

Update:

Turns out my aunt went ahead and bought the newest version of the peachtree complete. She has a new computer (not sure what kind...pentium 3 maybe a 4) sitting in her office and the software arrived there also. Its been sitting there for a few days waiting to be setup. LOL Anyway she obviously isnt very computer literate and was wondering since the last responses author should knopw if there is a Peachtree for dummies book that covers the new version. At least if I get her that she can get a clue about it. Thanx...

Is there a PT 2002 for Dummies - the answer is yes and no. The book has been updated, but I don't believe it's actually on the streets yet. Should be released any time.

What state is your aunt located?
