Trying to understand segments. Using 5 digit numeric account number. 2 position alpha for a company identifier and a 2 digit numeric store identifier.ie NNNNN-AA-NN. Did not set up segments when company was set up but peachtree says you can do later thru Maintain/Default Info/Gen Led. After completing segment screen and clicking OK, get error "[ ]is not a gen led acct #." Selecting an existing account number and then defining segments yields same results. What am I not understanding about the relationship of segmented accounts to this "Default Info" ?? Does there have to be a distinct general ledger account set up for all the combinations created by the different segments; or do you just set up the five digit numeric account and record the additional segments when specific transactions are journalized ?

A couple of thoughts:
From "help" in the program:
1. "It is advisable to set up your account segments before you enter all of your accounts."
2. "You can partition your General Ledger Account ID into segments"

Under Maintain, Default Information, General Ledger you should enter this information:

"Segment Description: Enter a description (up to 10 characters) for the segment. This description could be department, division, or any other designator for that segment of your Account ID. This description will appear on all windows that reference account segments. For instance, General Ledger report and Financial Statement filtering options.

Length: Enter the length of the segment. For example, if this segment of the account ID is two characters in length, enter 2 in this field.

Separator: Specify a separator between this segment and the segment following it (if any). The default separator is a hyphen (-), but you can select other values from the drop-down list. In addition, you can type in any other character as a separator, with the exception of the asterisk (*), question mark (?), plus sign (+), and a blank space.

As you enter values for the Length and Separator fields for each segment, Peachtree updates the Account Structure field and shows you how the Account ID is structured, with a capital X used to represent each space in the segment length. Moreover, Peachtree updates the Total Account Length field, telling you how long the account ID is. The maximum length is 15."

When you have finished creating your segments, click OK.

Your account numbers should match the segments. 1st segment (first = description (i.e.) length =3 - = seperator), 2nd segment second, (length = 2).

account # = (i.e.) 100-01

your account numbers (i.e.) = 10000-AA-01
first length = 5
2nd length=2
3rd length=2

Thanks for your help. Discovered that the problem was that a rounding account was not being entered on the other tab of window. Read in Peachtree that a rounding account was not required if financial statements were not being printed in whole dollars. As soon as I completed the screens for both tabs it worked. Used the Retained Earnings Account for the rounding account as suggested in the manual. Thanks again for your input.
