When trying to open PeachTree Fixed Assets from our workstations, we are getting the following error message:
"The Fixed Assets FALIMIT.DAT file could not be found. Please reinstall PeachTree Fixed Assets or your latest tax update for PeachTree Fixed Assets."
Reinstalling hasn't gotten rid of the problem though. I can get on our server and find the data file just fine, but the workstations just recently stopped locating it. I don't have any problems opening PeachTree fixed assets while working right on the server though. It locates the data file just fine.
No user permissions have been changed in any way since well before this problem arose. Any suggestions.

Have you changed the path or mappings to the fixed asset data? The data should store under "\PEACHW\company name" instead of locating in the root directory of the mapped drive.

Our controller wanted Peachtree Complete Accounting 8.0 moved to our NT 4.0sp6a server from his Win98 workstation, so I just tried installing PCA 8.0 on the server and then as a client on another Win98 workstation (pointing to a share on the server).
I exported data from the controller's Win98 workstation and then imported it into the NT server. Peachtree Complete Accounting (PCA) works fine on both the NT server and the Win98 client, but Peachtree Fixed Assets (PFA) only works on the NT server. On the Win98 client, PFA gives this error message:
The Fixed Assets FALIMIT.DAT file could not be found. Please reinstall Peachtree Fixed Assets or your latest tax update for Peachtree Fixed Assets.
I've tried reinstalling Peachtree on the Win98 client to no avail.
A Google search only shows an old post from peachtreeusers.com.
http://www.google.com/search?q=FALIMIT.DAT
I have tried installing a "patch" (registry edit) from the peachtree.com site for NT 4.0 and Win2k. It didn't work, though.
Disable Disk File Caching for Peachtree Release 8.0 (or lower)
http://www.peachtree.com/updates_available/html/disable_file_caching.cfm
It disables some type of disk file caching for network shares (or at least that's how I understand it). Be sure to read the Microsoft knowledgebase article, too, since this change has the potential to decrease performance on your NT or Win2k server.
How to Disable Network Redirector File Caching (Q163401)
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q163/4/01.asp
Since PFA still works on the NT server and we don't need to use it that often, the short-term solution is to simply sit down at the server to use it (as much as that pains me as the administrator).
I'm reluctant to call Peachtree support for $40 a shot, though. The last time I did, I spent $40 for them to point me to the updates section of the web site (which was not easy to find, in my opinion) and download a 13MB patch.

The problem was that I was sharing the C:\PEACHW directory from my NT server and mounting it as P:\ on the Win98 client. It appears that while Peachtree Complete Accounting (PCA) will work with this setup, Peachtree Fixed Assets (PFA) will not.
PFA wants the \PEACHW directory below the share, so my (current) solution is to share the whole C:\ drive on the NT server so that PFA sees P:\PEACHW on the client. I was able to do this by changing the sharing privileges on the NT server, then changing the share mount on the client, and finally editing the PCW80.INI file on the client to point to the correct directory by changing "P:\" to "P:\PEACHW").
I realize that this is a very insecure solution, but it at least works. This seems like a bug in PFA to me (since PCA works fine).
Peachtree actually has a document in the "knowledge center" on their web site that explains how to set up Peachtree in a network environment (which I didn't follow when setting up the software initially). It is under the "support" link, then the "knowledge center" link. You must sign up for an account on the web site to access it, though.
Look for Answer ID 253 "Installing Peachtree on a Network" (6 pages). The easiest way to do this is to search under "Peachtree Complete Accounting" in the "Networks" category. Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, too.
I guess this is basically what Jacky Tse posted as well.
Good luck!

Thanks Dave and Jacky. Your posts helped me out a great deal. My missing falimit.dat problem is now fixed and everything is working great and I owe it all to the two of you.
Thanks again,
Darren
