How do I transfer the data in fixed assets from a single user system to a totally different multi-user system. I originally was unable to get the multi-user F/A system to work, so I purchased a single user system for my home use and set up my company's fixed assets at home. I have upgraded at work and would now like to transfer the data. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

DISCLAIMER: MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR DATA BEFORE TRYING ANY PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS POST. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TIME OR DATA LOST IN ATTEMPTING ANY PROCEDURE OUTLINED BELOW.

Okay, having said that, I was able to transfer fixed assets data from a stand-alone installation of Peachtree Fixed Assets (PFA) v8.0 to a network installation of the same version under Windows NT 4.0. PFA is a part of Peachtree Complete Accounting (PCA) v8.0.

The problem I originally ran into, after knowing I wanted to transfer the data, was that there didn't seem to be any way to import and export the fixed asset data from PFA. So I devised a way to transfer the data through (un)educated guessing.

NOTE: This procedure assumes that you do not have any fixed asset data in the "new" company, or that you don't care if this data is overwritten. Please reread the disclaimer above.

What I did was to copy every file in the "old" company folder that started with "fa" (i.e., fa*.*) into the "new" company folder. Follow this procedure to try it. (Note that I am typing this from memory. Reread the disclaimer above again.)

Note that the "old" company is the folder under the stand-alone \PEACHW installation which contains the fixed assets you want to move to the "new" company. The "new" company is the folder under the networked \PEACHW installation to which you want to move the fixed assests.

Have all users quit Peachtree Complete Accounting and Peachtree Fixed Assets, including copies on the server.
Disconnect mapped drives on each of the client computers.
Unshare the shared drive that the \PEACHW folder is installed on. (This will forcefully disconnect the clients' mapped drives if you skipped or missed a computer in the previous step.)
Make a backup copy of the "new" company folder under the \PEACHW folder. This will be your "oh crap" restoration copy of the "new" company.
Delete all of the files that begin with "fa" (fa*.*) from the "new" company folder.
Copy all of the files that begin with "fa" (fa*.*) from the "old" company folder to the "new" company folder.
Start Peachtree Complete Accounting and open the "new" company. Check to make sure everything looks okay.
Exit Peachtree Complete Accounting and start Peachtree Fixed Assets. Check to make sure that all of the fixed assets were "transferred" from the original installation to the new installation.
Exit Peachtree Fixed Assets.
If there are any issues, move the current "new" company folder to the trash (or some other directory like C:\TEMP), then copy the "oh crap" backup into the \PEACHW folder. Rerun PCA and PFA to make sure all data is back to normal.
Reshare the drive with the \PEACHW folder.
Remap the shared drive to the client computers.
Start Peachtree Complete Accounting and Peachtree Fixed Assets on each client to make sure they are able to see all of the data.

Note that I did this on v8.0 of Peachtree Complete Accounting when moving assets from the stand-alone version to the network version. Any other combinations of versions, stand-alone versus networked, or phases of the moon probably won't work.

But I hope that helps! (You read the disclaimer, right?)
