We are currently running PT Complete 8.01 on five machines. One is an XP box, the rest are 98/98SE, and the server is NT4.0 SP6 running with Novell support.

When we try to update to 8.02 or 2002 on the 98/98SE machines we get the following error: "You are attempting to update Peachtree Accounting on a drive that does not support long file names. To install this update, you must reinstall Peachtree to a directory name that is eight characters or less."

What is strange is that the error is completely wrong. First off, the update gets installed on the client machine, correct? 98 definitely supports long filenames, and the directory it's currently installed in on all machines is C:\peachw. The server also supports long filenames and is installed in a \peachw directory, so I'm pretty curious as to why we're seeing this error. If both drives support long filenames and it's already in a six character directory, what's the problem?

I would like to mention that I was able to successfully update to 8.02 on the XP box, but have not tried going to 2002 yet. I'm guessing it must be a problem PT has with 98, but haven't seen any other threads about this issue here or in the archives. I would gladly forget about going to 8.02, but we were required to download it to fix a problem we were having when closing out a year.

Does anyone have any ideas? The Peachtree support was very inefficient helping out with the last problem we had, and we're getting pretty antsy over here...

Thank you much for your help,

Brett Russell

What do you mean by "...with Novell support"? Will it be the source of the problem? Older versions of Novell do not support long file name, or some settings may restrict it.
