We have PT Complete 2005 with five computers. Through out the day any computer could be entering purchase orders, sales orders, receipts, invoices, etc. I run a backup at the end of each day on one of the computers after the other four users have left for the day and closed PT. Unfortunately, PT always tells me someone is still logged in and I cannot run the backup. I can go around to each computer and see that none have PT open. I have even used the Windows Task Manager to make sure the program is not running on another computer, but I still get the "this requires single user access" message in PT. My only workaround is to reboot the other computers. That solves the problem and the backup works fine. I have tried rebooting and testing one computer at a time hoping to find the problem was with only one computer, but the problem varies between different ones. Is there a wrong way to exit PT that could cause a file to be left open? Is there some particular process that, if run, could possibly keep some PT file open? Any ideas would be appreciated.

When the Peachtree Program starts up and you go into a company 2 things happen. The Peachtree Program is running and a Process called W32MKDE.EXE ( the database engine) is also running. If Peachtree Closes in a unfriendly way (i.e Program locks up , C+D+DEL, Power outage, ect ) the program Peachtree will be Closed but the DataBase engine will still be running.
If you go to each Work station and look to see if W32MKDE.EXE process is running and do a END PROCESS. You can also accomplish this by rebooting the WS Or server where the Data is stored.

Afterward you should be able to do the BU.
The reason the W32MKDE.EXE is running is because someone is getting kicked out of Peachtree or your WS is not releasing the W32MKDE.EXE after closing the Program.

Disable Write Behind Caching on all local drives. This is done under Hdwe Properties, Disk Drives, Policiies. This Windows feature can cause locks not to be released, if a user exits from Peachtree on a Workstation and then immediatley exits from Windows / Computer or a power related glitch knocks a user off while in Peachtree. Check the integrity of your UPS on each workstations (assuming that you have a battery backup UPS on each and every computer).
