I am using Version 6 and am trying to close year 2000 but am getting an error - New Periods could not be assigned! Close Fiscal Year Failed! Please recover from backup. I have 2 companies set up. We do not use payroll so I have never closed out payroll (started in 1999) The first company closed out 2000 with no problems so I am guessing that not closing payroll is not the problem. There is also no open year 2000 items.

I, too, had enormous problems closing with V 6 last year. Peachtree support (for a large fee) was totally useless. After many unsuccessful tries, we finally bought a new computer with a much larger hard drive and everything went perfectly. We can only surmise that Peachtree needs a certain amount of room to work during closing. Of course, they wouldn't tell you this. Now, before I do a closing on anyone's computer, I check the free space first. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. How much free space should I check for. This company is small (only about 75 customers) and we only use the Accounts Receiveable and Customer Statements features.

Checked my space and I have plenty. Is there an error log that gives a more descriptive reason of the failure?

I too had the same problem with the same error message using version 6.0 when we tried to close out 2001.

We had already purchased a new computer system and PTC version 9, so I migrated the version 6 company folders to the new computer and converted to version 9.

I do DAILY backups without exception now.

I spoke with tech support and found the I had footing errors. I cleared them up with integrity checks as instructed, however, I still get the same error. Tech support is going to look into my problem further and let me know what else to try. I'll give it one more try with them. If it doesn't work I'll just have to create another company and reenter all my data.

Can anyone tell me what RECOVER COMPANY does? Should I give that a try? If anyone else has any ideas I could try I would appreciate your help.

We guarantee we can fix your footing errors, or there's no charge.

More info. here. (http://peachtreeusers.com/datarepair.htm)

Peachtree should have had you send your data in if you are in release PCW8 or 2002. They repaired some footing errors for me at no charge in a 2002 company.

When Peachtree closes a year it must change the periods for all records. Since this is a very dangerous operation to do on live data, the process creates a copy of the data files and modifies them. If everything goes ok, then it replaces the originals. So a good rule of thumb is that you need about as much free space as your current company folder uses.

However, if you are close on available space you are probably going to have serious problems due to fragmentation of your disk. A badly fragmented disk can make the process work several times as hard to get the data on and off disk and can significantly raise the probability of an error.

Another point - never close the year from a client machine across the network. This is just asking for trouble. If you are running client-server, do the close directly on the server.

Regarding the question about "Recover Company", I presume what you meant was "Repair Company" that appears on the menu bar when you enable integrity checking. Repairing a company is little more than a bulk reindex of all files. Reindexing essentially makes a new copy of the Btrieve file without any records, then reads all the records from the old file in physical order and writes them to the new one. This forces Btrieve to recreate the index information for all the records.

I'm getting the same close error this year on another company that I have set up. Main problem this time is that I can't seem to recover my data from before I started the close. I use microsoft backup (I'm on Windows 98). I'm getting the following error when trying to recover -

An error occurred while retrieving the backup directory. The
backup device stopped responding 07-0D-2A-03-001E.

Anyone come across this? Am I out of luck? I just want to be able to have my data in tact to be able to refer to it. My ultimate solution will be to get my companies off peachtree completely. I'm not going to pursue to fix the close problem only for it to happen again to me next year.

Thanks,
AMH

Were any of you able to resolve the problem of getting the message "New periods could not be assigned!"?

Alex002: Which version are you using? Did you check for free space on the hard drive? What is your operating system?
