I have followed the instructions in the on-line help for PCAW 2002 to disable the startup screen and automatically open one of the demo companies but it does not work. Even though Options | View Startup Screen is unchecked the startup screen still appears. How can I get rid of it?

billtodd,
crazy questions for you.
1. are you on a network?
2. where is "your" data stored?
3. you are looking for the ptree to open directly into your company, correct?
if you want to you can directly email me at salkay@aol.com, if that helps

Bill in your windows directory in windows explorer, there is a file called pcw90.ini. if you edit the file, in the file there is a line that says:
DATAPATH=DRIVE LETTER:\PROGRAM DIRECTORY
that datapath should be you drive letter where your company data resides and the program directory of where your programs are. if it is anything different, please email me and i will help you through this.

I'm sure you did, but just in case . . . did you hit "Save and Exit" at the lower left hand of the screen before you exited? It took me a couple tries before I got that part.

Right answer, wrong question (I think)<g>. Save and Exit is at the bottom of the Preferences tab of the Peachtree Today window.
What I am trying to get rid of is the dialog box titled "Peachtree Accounting" that has a graphic of peaches on the left and choices for
Open an Existing Company
Set up a New Company
Learn About Peatree...
Explore a sample company
Convert a QuickBooks company...
Close this window.
You can get rid of this window for a real company by unchecking Options | View Startup Screen on the menu, however, unchecking this for the demo companies does not work. I need to use the demo companies for some testing and to do that testing (don't ask why) I need to suppress this screen. What I need to know is how to make Peachtree treat the sample companies just like a company that I create. Thanks for your help.

okay bill, you got me curious on this one. i am actually a ptree tech and have NEVER heard of this. i know that depending on what the properties of your icon are for the program directory and what the pcw90.ini file say that could be causing it. so if you can edit that pcw90.ini file and tell me what your datapath= and also if you page down you will see program directory= and then page down alittle further and there will be something that says
last company open
please reply back with all the answers and i will further help you.
again if you find it easier to email me, please feel free

Here is the PCW90.INI file. Thanks for your help with this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
; This is the configuration and current status file for Peachtree Complete
; Accounting. The information stored here is located in the same directory as
; the WIN.INI file, which means that for network users, each user has their own
; copy and thus, potentially their own set of information. Therefore, if any
; configuration information MUST apply to the entire system regardless of user,
; it does not belong here, but in the OPTIONS.DAT file.
; Exception: note that the information to FIND the OPTIONS.DAT file
; ("DATAPATH=" and "BTRIEVE=") MUST be here anyway.
; The first section is the "Lib" section, which contains information necessary
; for the PEACHLIB DLL. Any application which uses that DLL will get
; information from here.
[Lib]
;
; The DATAPATH is where the errorlog, the help file, the form files, and the
; OPTIONS.DAT file are found. In addition, each set of "Company Data" is
; located in its own subdirectory off of this DATAPATH. The default value
; is "C:\PEACHW".
DATAPATH=C:\Peachw
;
; If Yes, AUTODECIMAL causes the computer to insert decimal points if the user
; does not, as though the user entered cents. If No, the user enters their
; own decimal point and if they don't they have entered whole dollars.
AUTODECIMAL=Yes
;
; The Install section is used only by the installation program.
[Install]
;
; The INSTALLED flag tells whether or not the PAW has ever been installed.
INSTALLED=YES
;
; The PROGRAMPATH is used to tell where the EXE file has been installed. This
; is also used to find the "BOOK" program.
PROGRAMPATH=C:\Peachw
PROGRAMGROUP=Peachtree Complete Accounting
CDROM=D:\
TUTORIAL=Yes
SAMPLE=Yes
FORMS=Yes
VERSION=PCW
; The Options section contains various "personality" types of options which
; control the behavior of the program, particularly the "look and feel".
; These options are intended to be personalized per user on a network.
[Options]
;
; The STATUSBAR flag tells whether or not the Status Bar appears in the Window.
STATUSBAR=Yes
;
MAINWINDOWSIZE=NORMAL
; The OneLineListEdit option tell the journals and other screens whether or not
; to display the second line
OneLineListEdit=N
; The ShowStartup option tells the software whether or not to show the
; startup screen.
ShowStartup=No
; The LastCompanyOpen option tells the software which company to highlight
; as the default in the company open dialog

okay bill this is what i am thinking that your pcw90.ini file is damaged. so what i would try to do is delete or rename the pcw90.ini and reload ptree. that will create a new pcw90.ini. and make sure you take the startup option off again and lets see what happens.

After renaming PCW90.INI I tried to start Peachtree and got to following error. "Peachtree has detected that Microsoft Windows 2000 is installed on your computer and that you are currently logged on with restricted user rights. To run Peachtree Accounting, you must have non-restrictive (Power User or Administrator) rights..."
This must be a bug in Peachtree since I am a member of the Administrators group on this computer.
What should I try now? If I have to I can uninstall, delete the PeachW directory, and reinstall.

bill this is getting more and more interesting. yes you can uninstall and the reinstall ptree that will also allow you to recreate that pca90.ini file. if you do this remember to backup your ptree somewhere on a floppy, cdrw or zip. if you are going to uninstall ptree please make sure you do it through remove programs in the control panel. let me know.

I uninstalled Peachtree and deleted the peachw directory. I also confirmed that the PCW90.INI file was gone. I rebooted. I reinstalled Peachtree and rebooted. I started Peachtree, entered the registration information, opened Bellwether Garden Supply, unchecked Show Startup Screen on the Options menu and closed Peachtree. When I restarted Peachtree the startup screen appeared and Bellwether did not open automatically. I closed Peachtree.
Next, I copied the directory for my company back into peachw. I started Peachtree, opened my company, unchecked Show Startup Screen on the Options menu and closed Peachtree. When I restarted Peachtree the startup screen did _not_ appear and my company opened automatically. Somehow Peachtree knows the difference between the demo companies and "real" companies and treats them differently.
As an alternative solution, is there a way to make a copy of Bellwether Garden Supply and change its name or do something so that Peachtree will not think it is a demo company?

bill it really doesnt have anything to do with the bcs directory. it has everything to do with the pcw90.ini file. so that is why i suggested to reload, so..... let me know.

Let you know about what? Did you not see my message about having reinstalled Peachtree and still having the same problem?
It is not clear what you want me to do.

okay Bill i have an answer for you. Your are correct, you will never fix your issue.....
This is as designed. The startup screen should always display when the sample company was the last company open.
This came from a senior tech/developer at ptree directly
carrie
I really don't know how to do it in PCAW, but here it goes:
Is there any way you can backup the sample company data, create a new company and then restore the data? The idea is that Peachtree does not know that its a sample company because you have created another.
I tell you this because in my version of Peachtree I customized several reports and made some changes to the sample company and then I exported them to a new company to use them.
I hope you can fix this.
