Question Opening a new company file with prior data

I took over an office from a prior bookkeeper that did not complete the 2016 reconciliations for the taxes. I have been behind in getting that data cleaned up and now I am at the end of the 2 year period on Peachtree 2004. Can I leave the current company open (2016-2017) and open a 2018 "new company"? How do you recommend doing that process? Thank you for any input you can give and it is timely, as I have recurring invoicing (January 2018) that needs to be printed this next week.

You could open a new company to print 2018 invoices but once you clean up and close 2016 you'll have to re-enter all your 2018 transactions back into the old company.
