Custom Field Problems, Alternatives?

Hi all. I started working for a company a couple days ago that uses Peachtree. Nobody in the office is especially computer savvy, so this problem has persisted for quite a while. I'm pretty sure it's the complete version that they're using (didn't recall seeing "classic" or any dates or version numbers on the help file or manual). Anyhow, in the customer records, we'd like to keep a permanent record of directions to the customers house/business. I tried enabling a custom field for this purpose with some success, but it doesn't allow enough characters to give long directions. Is there any way to either modify the character limit of a custom field or create a new field type somewhere to handle this information? Previously they've typed out directions each time into "notes," but they've shown me that this isn't saved, or at least not saved to the customer (I assume it's saved to each order?). Hope I'm making sense, since I've only been using the software for 2 days.

Thanks for any help you can give.

PawCom has an enhanced Maintain Customer form that combines data in the Peachtree records with additional external data. The form includes several additional fields and the ability to add as many notes, tasks, and detailed contact records as you want for each customer.

You can download a demonstration kit at http://www.multiwareinc.com/pawcom.htm and try it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it's a small business, and I doubt they'll want to fork out over 300 bucks just for a this one tiny bit of functionality. Is there any way perhaps to alter the Peachtree customer template manually to add this new field? It would have to be done in such a way that it didn't conflict with any pre-existing data.

Unfortunately Peachtree is a closed system, so there is no way to add buttons or fields to their forms, change the field lengths, or add new fields.

There are 5 custom fields of 40 characters for a customer, so you have a total of 200 characters there. You could also add an event for the customer, which would give you a note field of 2000 characters. Also the customer web field is quite long, but not very practical for your purposes.

I think the event setup will work. It's not perfect, but at least the record can be stored with the customer, then cut and pasted into the "note" (which is set up to print driving directions). Many thanks.

Lightbulb Customer Directions

Here is an idea if you have a full time ISDN, DSL, T1 or other internet connection:

Use www.mapquest.com to find the customer's address. Copy the resulting URL (minus the http://) into the "Web Address" on the Maintain>Customer screen.

Copy this next URL in a sample customer and try it:

http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_f...1&Find+Map.y=7

Next time you need directions, just open the customer and click on the www icon. It will launch your browser and display the address with a map.

It's too bad that Peachtree preloads this function with the "http://" prefix or you could create HTML documents for directions in Word or other word processor on your local computer and refer to them.
